Just An Observation.

May 5th, 2009 | By Greg Gangelhoff in Self-Promotion, Wednesday Time Wasters | No Comments »

When one blog is showing you how to waste time in awesome ways, and the other is trying to chide you into being more productive (even tough they’re great ideas, VP!), isn’t it nice to know where you can come for fun?

For example, in lieu of trying to write faster or work harder, I recommend that everyone takes a trip over to Cute Overload right now. Why? Well, it has this!

Don’t you feel better now? I know I do. Have a great Tuesday, everyone.

Did you miss us? I bet you did. Well, the DM crew has taken some time off to recharge our batteries — Kalamazoo really does exist! — and we’re back to bring you the musings, news, and culture that you crave. To warm you up for the return to school, I offer a vision of the Perfect Night, from Olde English Comedy. Hopefully you all had plenty of nights like this in the past week:

Relating to my article on Obama’s image and celebrity, I now bring you the Barack Obama salon in Khartoum, Sudan. Don’t hold your breath for the Dick Cheney pizza parlor.

Also, check out this article about the music selected for the inaugural balls and how they relate to U.S. identity politics.

Hump Day Music: Heartbreak?

Does anyone like the new Kanye West album? It seems that his reviews are, at best, uneven. The Boston Globe calls “808s and Heartbreak” a “sonic wasteland,”and Spin magazine said it sounds “strangely rushed and unfinished.” Pitchfork noted the inherent contradictions in West’s own psyche, as he’s “hand-wringing over his consumption one moment, boasting about his wealth the next. He’s someone as driven by ego as he is plagued by doubt– in other words, a wholly human pop star.” It does seem to be West’s ‘indie’ album, and as the Onion’s A.V. club said, ” It seems destined to be the weird little orphan that fans single out as a favorite.” Read Full Post

The Daily Monthly: We’re Performers!

November 21st, 2008 | By Greg Gangelhoff in Self-Promotion, Wednesday Time Wasters | No Comments »

Have you ever wondered how to categorize the blog you’re reading? Wonder no longer, as Typealyzer professes to answer the age-old question: “What type is that blog?” Here’s what they had to say about The Daily Monthly, accompanied by the above picture and the distinction of belonging to the category of ‘The Performers’:

The entertaining and friendly type. They are especially attuned to pleasure and beauty and like to fill their surroundings with soft fabrics, bright colors and sweet smells. They live in the present moment and don“t like to plan ahead - they are always in risk of exhausting themselves.

The enjoy work that makes them able to help other people in a concrete and visible way. They tend to avoid conflicts and rarely initiate confrontation - qualities that can make it hard for them in management positions.

This fits quite nicely with Vox Populi’s recent evaluation of our femininity, but a second opinion is always nice. Hit the jump for analyses of Vox Populi, SaxaSpeak, and the Hoya’s sports blog.

UPDATE: The Heckler’s fantastic blog has now been included. My apologies for the omission.

The Daily Monthly: Reloaded.

Some of you may have noticed that The Daily Monthly has undergone some cosmetic surgery in the last few days. We were having technical difficulties with our last theme, and we had to let it go. Everything seems to be fixed in this new version, and we even have a fancy new banner to prove it! We hope you enjoy our new look, as well as some of the fancy new additions to our sidebar (the tag cloud made me giddy like a schoolgirl).

To make up for all of this sudden change, I offer you a sign of our continued love for our readers after the jump.
