Senior Citizenship: See Change

On Tuesday Barack Obama was elected president. He’s a half-Kenyan from a divorced family. He also excelled at Columbia and Harvard Law. You can read into his life story as you wish: it reaffirms the validity of the American Dream; it’s proof of the existence of American meritocracy; it represents a sea change in American racial politics. All those things are true – but they’re not what I want to discuss.

Barack Obama’s victory was staggering: 364 electoral votes to Sen. McCain’s 162 and 53% of the popular vote, 7 percentage points higher than Mr. McCain. What does this margin of victory suggest? I think it underscores how badly people wanted change from the Bush years: change in government policies and change in the America that he created.
